Two yellow-headed Amazon parrots rescued from smugglers are recovering in Florida — and learning to trust again

Papaya and Fig were intercepted at the U.S.–Mexico border in a smuggling attempt. They're now at the North Florida Wildlife Center, slowly relearning safety, food, and play.

Yellow-headed Amazons are critically endangered, with fewer than 7,000 left in the wild. Smuggling kills the vast majority of trafficked parrots in transit. The center hopes to give Papaya and Fig a permanent sanctuary home.

Please, please, please — never buy an exotic bird without verified provenance. Adopt from a reputable rescue. The smuggling trade is unimaginably cruel. 🦜
