Timmy the humpback, stranded in Germany for 5 weeks, has finally been towed to open ocean

After weeks beached in shallow Baltic waters, a young humpback named Timmy was floated onto a water-filled barge and ferried past Denmark into the North Sea. Aerial photos show him swimming free.

The unprecedented rescue involved German, Danish, and international marine teams. Timmy's release point was chosen to give him the best chance of rejoining a migrating pod. Conservationists call it 'the most ambitious cetacean rescue in European history.'
